The modern house stood silent as Vaidehi finished preparing dinner. At thirty-three, she moved with practiced efficiency, her professional demeanor still intact even in the comfort of her home. The scent of spices filled the air as she arranged the dishes on the dining table, anticipating the arrival of her old friends: Aniket, Kalpesh, and Sahil. They had been part of her life since college, and though they had all moved on with their careers and families, they maintained a connection through occasional dinners and drinks.
The doorbell rang promptly at eight. Aniket, ever the charmer, swept her into a hug before she could even greet him properly. Kalpesh and Sahil followed, bringing with them the familiar camaraderie that had defined their friendship for years. Gaurav, her husband of five years, greeted them warmly, though Vaidehi noticed the slight tension in his smile. He had never been entirely comfortable with her male friends, perhaps sensing the history that bound them together.
Dinner passed in a blur of laughter and reminiscence. Vaidehi found herself laughing at stories she hadn’t heard in years, the wine flowing freely as the evening progressed. When the plates were cleared, Aniket suggested music, and soon the living room was filled with the soft thrum of a bass line.
“Come on, Vaidehi,” Aniket said, holding out his hand. “Dance with me. For old times’ sake.”
She hesitated for a moment, glancing at Gaurav, who gave a slight nod. As she took Aniket’s hand and stepped into his arms, she felt a jolt of electricity that she hadn’t expected. Their bodies moved together, familiar from years of dancing at parties and clubs. The intimacy of the dance was intoxicating, and she found herself leaning into him, her head resting against his chest.
Suddenly, Aniket’s hand moved from her waist to the back of her neck, pulling her closer. His lips found hers in a kiss that was both unexpected and familiar. She froze, shocked by the boldness of his move, but before she could react, he was speaking against her lips.
